Martu IPA Plan of Management 2022-2027
For Martu, ensuring ngurra wanka (living country) is a process which begins with yaninpa ngurrarakarti (going to ngurra), continues with ngurraku ninti (knowledge of ngurra) and completes the cycle with kanyirninpa ngurrara (holding/caring for ngurra).
The Martu Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) Plan (the plan) has been developed by JYAC and KJ with and on behalf of the Martu who look after their ngurra through kanyirninpa ngurrara using ngurraku ninti and puntura-ya ninti (cultural and heritage knowledge).
The plan sets out their aspirations for management of their ngurra over the next 10 years. The plan covers the Percival and Waukarlicarly warla (lake) systems within the boundaries of the determination area.
The plan:
- outlines Martu aspirations for their ngurra;
- identifies the distinct but interconnected environmental, cultural, religious and economic values that characterise the warla systems and their management requirements from the Martu perspective; and
- provides a clear path for cultural, ecological and economic investment across the warla systems and tracking the effectiveness of those investments. Ensuring ngurra wanka in the IPA depends upon understanding and respecting the intrinsic links between the cultural, spiritual, ecological and economic values this plan sets out.
