JAMUKURNU-YAPALIKURNU ABORIGINAL CORPORATION (JYAC)
Martu are the Traditional Owners of more than 150,000 square kilometres of ngurra (country) in the western desert region of Western Australia. Martu ngurra includes the communities of Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji, Karlamilyi national Park, the Canning Stock Route and has more than 80 mining and exploration companies with 400+ live and pending tenements.
Jamukurnu-Yapalikurnu Aboriginal Corporation (JYAC) is a Martu corporation and the trustee for the native title rights of 1,500 Martu members and more than 3,000 Martu common law holders. The JYAC Board has 6 Martu directors and up to 3 independent directors. The corporation is one of the busiest PBCs in Western Australia with offices in Port Hedland, Newman and Perth. JYAC operates with 3 strategic priorities that guide all of its work:
- Protect ngurra
- Advance Martu wellbeing, and, when #1 and 2 are in progress
- Generate wealth and opportunity for Martu
Independent directors are expected to have knowledge and understanding of native title and experience in working with Aboriginal people. Independent directors will be expected to bring relevant professional qualifications, experience and networks to enhance the work of the corporation. A commitment to the advancement of Martu is essential and so too is a mix of skills and experience across community, industry and government sectors. Applicants will hold professional experience and qualifications, including:
- Australian Institute of Company Directors qualification or similar
- Board experience in businesses with a turnover of $5million per year or more
- Personal and professional references (minimum of 3)
- ATO Director Identification Number
Appointment is for an initial 2-year period. Appointment and reappointment is at the discretion of the JYAC Board.
